Update on Mary Christmas – Our Sponsor Bear

LOCATION: Laos
SPECIES: Sun Bear
NAME: Mary Christmas
DETAILS: Female, rescued Dec 2018

Sponsor Bear

Mary is as happy and healthy as ever. She’s now weighing 70kg, which is a little on the heavier size for an adult female sun bear, but no cause for concern. As you can see below, she’s looking great! She still spends much of her time wrestling with her best friend Facebook, although he’s also taken an interest in another female, Fonty, providing Mary with space. Watch a recent broadcast from the sanctuary with Mary here. Since our last update you’ve helped us rescue 7 more bears from a life of suffering including an extremely rare golden moon bear and 2 cubs with snare wounds that resulted in loss of a paw and limb.
Watch Laos rescues here and here, and Cambodia rescues here and here. To cope with all the rescues, most of which are rapidly growing cubs, we’ve already commenced construction work on
Bear Houses 10-12 at our Luang Prabang Wildlife Sanctuary, which we hope to complete within the year. It’s not only bears you’ve helped, we also rescued 5 critically endangered Sunda pangolins in recent months. Sadly, 3 didn’t make it. The 2 survivors were able to be released to protected forest once
cleared by our vets. Thank you for your support.
