It is morning when we dock in the historic city of Trondheim, which was founded over a thousand years ago. Nidaros Cathedral is the landmark of the city; it is Norway’s national shrine and one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. After our visit here, the voyage continues out into the fjord, into an abundant archipelago and heads for northern Norway.

On this stretch, we mark crossing the Arctic Circle with a ceremony and continue onward into the Arctic regions. It means midnight sun in the summer, while winter days are merely a shade less dark than night-time and, possibly, Northern Lights in the evenings. Nature is powerful with northern Scandinavia’s largest glacier, the world’s strongest tidal current and encounters with the majestic sea eagle. In the evening, Lofoten’s fishing villages, steep mountains and Vikings await.

The voyage continues on through narrow fjords and past wild mountains to Tromsø, a city characterised by hunting and fishing, polar expeditions and courage. Now you have also reached the land of the Sami, Norway’s indigenous people. Meeting the Sami and their reindeer while hearing about the Sami culture is a unique experience you will remember.

As far north as you can get – by land and sea. For many, the visit to the North Cape is a high point and a goal for voyages along the Norwegian coast. Up here in the polar landscape, nature is at its harshest and most desolate, but between bare plains and rugged cliffs people cling on and reap nature’s bounty. You can also have a taste of the catch. How about some king crab?

The Sámi Museum and Nature Centre Siida is located in the town of Inari, in the Sámi Homeland. The Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre are responsible for organizing activities at Siida. The exhibitions and events give the visitors a window into the north providing information on the ancient and vibrant Sámi culture and arctic nature.

The Aurora Cabins at the Northern Lights Village are a magical way to experience the wintry star-filled sky and the Northern Lights, while lying comfortably in the warm bed. The laser-heated glass-roof opens up into the northern sky, directly above the bed.

Driving a team of huskies over the white, shimmering fells is an experience that is almost mandatory during a trip to Lapland. The eager dogs run at full speed and the sleigh glides effortlessly over the snowdrifts with the skids hissing softly. The lead dog turns to look at you at a crossroads – right of left? Mush!
The husky safari starts nearby the resort and takes you on a fast-paced trip over the untouched snow of the fells and the forests surrounding the Northern Lights Village. This is an experience that you will never forget!

You get to meet with a reindeer breeder who will inform you about the reindeer and the Sámi people. And of course, you also get to feed the reindeer and drive a reindeer sleigh through the snowy forest. Sit down into the sleigh, signal the reindeer – and hold on! Now you get to see how Laplanders used to move around before snowmobiles arrived in the northern wilderness. Riding a reindeer sleigh through the wintery forest is an experience that seldom comes around in one’s life!

The reindeer ride starts and ends in the reindeer paddock at the Northern Lights Village.

• Dinner overnight in Glass igloo 1-2 guests at Arctic Snow Hotel or similar
  • 20m² in size and suitable for 1-3 persons. Each glass igloo has its own toilet and shower as well as refrigerator, electric kettle, hairdryer. There are two twin beds as due to the motorization feature of the beds there can’t be a double bed.
    The glass-roofed igloos provide you the opportunity to sleep beneath the starry skies and the Northern Lights when they appear. Each igloo is extremely well heat insulated.

Depart hotel, and transfer to the workshop and home of two artisans Irene and Ari Kangasniemi. The Artisan Studio & Home visit: Explore with us the versatile use of reindeer antlers as a material used in handicrafts and the fascinating history of working antlers. We will demonstrate for you how antler is worked while telling you stories about reindeer and living in the vast expanses of Lapland. As we reveal to you some of our professional skills, you will have the opportunity to make your own souvenir of your visit. We will also tell you about other materials collected from Lapland’s nature for use in handicrafts.

The SECRET OF THE ANTLER is one of our most popular handicraft programs. At our handicraft workshop, you get the chance to make your own small object made from reindeer antler.

Following this, you will be taken to explore our genuine, Lappish home and way of life. The local cuisine will naturally become familiar as we drink a cup of tea with home made sweets while sitting around the table in our private home. The cosy warmth of the wood-fired baking oven takes away any chill the winter may bring.
