Cruising the Mekong with Avalon Waterways
2019 with Annette Porter
I have just come back from a fabulous week long holiday cruising the Mekong River with Avalon Cruises. Wow it certainly exceeded all expectations. I had travelled out of Saigon for a day trip to the Mekong and I expected much the same on our cruise, well I could not have been more wrong. Every day was a different experience learning about the culture and local traditions of the people we met along the way.
Our ship was stunning, the all-suite Avalon Siem Reap had all the modern features with huge cabins and very spacious public areas. There are only 18 cabins on board which means you get to meet the rest of the guests which gives it a real family feel. There were 28 guests on our cruise, and everyone moved around tables at each meal time meaning that we got to know each other quite well and made some fabulous new friends. Our cruise consisted of lots of fun people from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America.
Our wonderful home for 7 nights
All Staterooms are the same – perfect
The size of our ship meant we could get into a lot of places that the bigger ships could not and therefore visit villages where there were no other tourists. We travelled by different modes of transport including a bullock cart and we had many opportunities to engage with the people from the villages. One of the highlights for me was helping the kids at school with their English.
Had a great time in English Class
Avalon organised our excursions perfectly, they went from about 1.5 hours to 3.5 hours at a time, with one after breakfast then another after you had enjoyed a fabulous lunch and had a chance to freshen up. It was much easier to deal with the heat this way. You were always welcomed back on board with a cold juice and a cold towel – perfect.
The food on board was out of this world with plenty of options of Western and Local food. Drinks were included all day at the bar (except wine which was included at Lunch and Dinner)
Setting up for another yummy lunch
The service on board was faultless, we were all treated like one of the family and they knew our names by the first couple of days.
Our amazing staff
This is certainly a fabulous way to see the Mekong and experience life along this incredible river. There is absolutely nothing I could fault which is strange to me as I can be a very fussy traveller. Stunning accommodations, great food and drinks, 5-star service and a fabulous mix of excursions. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in life along the Mekong River and experiencing it with a small group and not having to fight bus loads of tourists, ensuring a genuine experience for everyone. Of course, returning to the ship for 5-star meals and some fabulous wine is also a big plus.
