Who’d have thought that a phone call to a friend in October 2020 would have resulted in a personal challenge and personal best?! I was invited to join the Travel with Me “Tastes, Trails & Tall Trees Pemberton” trip, 04-08 December. I love travelling, especially to new places. The itinerary was full of new, unique, and exciting experiences; how could I refuse?
The challenge? I’d not done any trail walking/hiking before. I bought everything I would need, put in the training, and joined my friend for a lovely break in our exquisite South West. Bibbulmun Track, here I come!
Travel with Me owner, travel planner and tour escort, Annette Porter, arranged transfers from/to Perth via TransPerth coach. Our group’s four-night accommodation in Pemberton was at the picturesque, tranquil, and extremely comfortable Forest Lodge Resort. An evening welcome BBQ amongst new friends/fellow travellers, a good night’s sleep followed by a decadent breakfast, and we were off!
Hello Bibbulmun Track! The forests with their spectacular trees, flora and fauna, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, birds, and fresh air were astonishingly beautiful. The local tour guides were a pleasure to meet; friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the area. A delicious winery lunch, an evening pub pit stop, and then dinner, completed our day. Our next day of walking and stunning scenery was accompanied by a 4WD sand dune and beach driving experience … wow … just wow! A late afternoon walk along the Bibbulmun took us to the beautiful Karri Valley Resort, where we were spoiled for choice from both the drinks and incredible food menus. Oh, and the sunset over the lake! Day four included a scenic historical tram ride, rapids, a walk to the Gloucester Tree then back to the Forest Lodge Resort. Our final evening was spent cruising and dining along the Donnelly River, like only the locals know how. Hidden treasures and natures stunning magnificence were accompanied by a river side BBQ at sundown. Another “wow … just wow … moment in time” was the night cruise back up the river; something you must see to believe.
My personal best? 30km of trail walking/hiking in three days.
Thank you, Annette, for the experience of a lifetime! (Tastes, Trails & Tall Trees Pemberton)
